Science and Health

In the first article in the Christian Science Journal of April, 1891, entitled “Science and Health,” the great comparative value of the successive revision of Science and Health is set forth in the following language:

“A practical suggestion or two regarding study of the new edition:  In the first place, do not attempt to dispose of the earlier edition.  Some are asking, “can we be permitted to exchange?’  Probably not; but you do not want to do so, even if you can.  Fortunate is he who has all former revisions, together with the original edition of 1875!  They are indicators of successive stages of growth in Christian Science; and as such, at some future day will not only possess historic value, but will be exceedingly difficult to procure.  Keep them all; they will prove a “treasure-trove.”  Again: let the new volume be studied in connection with earlier editions.  The very contrasts help us to see how the thoughts have risen only as we have been able to receive them.”

SCIENCE OF MAN – 1870 & 1874.

Mrs. Mary Baker Glover, wrote  two class  drill handbooks of Christian Science entitled the SCIENCE OF MAN.  The 1st edition was printed in 1870, copyrighted in 1883,  and 2nd Edition was printed in 1874, copyrighted in 1876.

SCIENCE AND HEALTH’s chapter entitled ‘Recapitulation’  p. 465 states:  “This chapter is from the first edition of the author’s class-book, copyrighted in 1870.  After much labor and increased spiritual understanding, she revised this treatise for this volume in 1875.  Absolute Christian Science pervades its statements, to elucidate scientific metaphysics.”

Both books included:  $20

SCIENCE AND HEALTH – 1ST EDITION  – 1875.

“My reluctance to give the public, in my first edition of Science and Health, the chapter on Animal Magnetism, and the divine purpose that this should be done, may have an interest for the reader, and will be seen in the following circumstances.  I had finished that edition as far as that chapter, when the printer informed me that he could not go on with my work.”  “After months had passed, I yielded to a constant conviction that I must insert in my last chapter a partial history of what I had already observed of mental malpractice.  Accordingly I set to work, contrary to my inclination, to fulfil this painful task, and finished my copy for the book.  As it afterwards appeared . . . my printer resumed his work at the same time, (and) finished printing the copy he had on hand.” (quotes from Retrospection by Mary Baker Eddy)

To The Reader: The “First Edition of Science and Health – 1865”, by Mary Baker Glover, contains two pages at the end of the book entitled “Errata”. The definition for “Errata” is “an error or mistake in writing or printing”. The 67 mistakes listed have been corrected in this reproduction. Each correction is listed in the footnotes on the appropriate page. This causes a much easier flow of reading without having to continually look at the back of the book to find the mistakes. In no other way was this wonderful book, “Science and Health – 1st Edition” changed.

SCIENCE AND HEALTH – 2ND EDITION – 1878.

Also known as the “Ark” or “Noah’s Ark” Edition.

“The following is a brief sketch of one of the most diabolical conspiracies that ever disgraced the annals of history…”  Dr. Eddy and E. J. Arens had been arrested for conspiracy to murder D.S.–.., but the murdered man was alive and well, hidden away, and making merry with his friends.” (Quotations from SCIENCE AND HEALTH 3rd Edition, pages 20-21 by Mary Baker Eddy).

There were also various issued involving the Printer in this volume.  Only half the book was published (being  “lost”) and there were several mistakes in the typeset.  Mrs. Eddy made a list of errors and insisted the printer include this list, although there were huge resistance to this.   Only a portion of this 2nd edition was published–most pages having been ruined.  Thus the words “Volume II” were included on the Title page, with the intent of being united to the 1st Edition.

CHOATE, Boston.

SCIENCE AND HEALTH – 50th EDITION – 1891.

Never before had Mrs. Eddy given such emphasis on any prior or latter edition of Science and Health.  She spend SIX Journal pages talking of “the New Book”!    The following are excerpts taken from the

Christian Journal of March, 1891 – pages 509 – 515.

THE NEW BOOK.

FIAT LUX.

“THE long-looked-for, much-coveted volume of SCIENCE AND HEALTH, that is to mark an epoch in the Christian Science movement, has at last appeared; and will be eagerly searched, studied, poured over, by every student among us.”  (p. 509)

    “. . . A few observations are worthy a place.

1st.  Every careful student will discover that the new volume is pre-eminently a book of the Spirit.  This is not to intimate a lack in the letter; but, to claim that the conscientious student of the new SCIENCE AND HEALTH cannot long remain in the letter merely.  He will be taken out of that into the unfolding glories of Truth.  Especially will he be led to a realization that, to be a genuine Christian Scientist, Love must become the sole law of his being–its beginning and end.  The letter is all expressed–otherwise the book could not be what it should be–but it does not appear as a skeletonized system of abstract doctrine.  It is clothed in radiant grace and loveliness which cause us to forget its presence as mere letter and, indeed, it is not  time we turned our attention higher! In truth, the evangelistic spirit of this new Science and Health is its crowning merit.  Christian Science becomes something for practical, every-day life; thus, more and more will it be recognized as being–not a mere theory–but a life of individual goodness and Truth.” (p. 514)

“3rd.  The new SCIENCE AND HEALTH will prove, to many, an invitation to the wedding feast.  ‘Write, blessed are they who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’  Happy, indeed, are they who having on the wedding garment come–and come as to a feast spread for all; a feast where Understanding, Truth, Joy and Love nourish and sustain our fainting senses. ” (p. 515)

Miscellaneous Writings 1897 22nd Edition

The Testimonials in this 1897 Edition makes one cringe when compared to today’s testimonials.  The early Christian Scientists endured many hardships on their way West.  Many were quite isolated with their neighbors living miles away.  But on their journey West they relied on Christian Science.

A Good Read!

No & Yes 1st Edition Reproduction
$12.00

The capitalization is much more pronounced in the 1st and 2nd “No and Yes.” Mrs. Eddy knew when to capitalize and when not to capitalize.

The 1st Edition contains 8 extra pages dealing with Malicious Mental Malpractice, while the 2nd Edition excludes those pages. It’s quite interesting as Mrs. Eddy uses the terminology of “mind-quacks” throughout those 8 extra pages. My personal opinion is that Mrs. Eddy “dumbed down” on the 2nd Edition by excluding the “Malicious Mental Malpractice” pages. My opinion is that she felt the field was not ready for that topic, which is why the 1st Edition is very rare. What say you?

The differences between today’s edition and the early editions are practically on every page after 1921. The capitalization of words seems to be missing which is HUGE if one does not know when to capitalize and when not to capitalize. Many of the pages are different from the 1st and 2nd, but this could be from the changes over the years that Mrs. Eddy made.
